Matters

The “Matters” screen displays a list of matters that are available in MatterAlert, which the current logged-in user has access to.

  • Default view only displays list of “Active/Open” matters.
  • The matter list can be sorted by column by clicking on each column’s header.
  • The user can filter the list by column by typing in the search text at the top of each column and pressing enter.
  • The “Remove Filters” ( ) button will clear the search and display the original list.
  • The search textbox at the top right corner allows the user to search and filter the list by Matter No, Client No, Matter Name, Client Name, and Matter Owner name.

  • The “Show All” ( ) button on the top right corner shows the list of “Closed” matters (if any).
  • Matter Names is a clickable link that navigates to the matter dashboard.
  • The user is shown matters that have been favorited first with the star icon " ". The user can click on the icon to add or remove the matter from their favorites.
  • By default, the list shows ten matters at a time.
  • The pager at the bottom of the list allows the user to change the number of items per page, as well as display the total number of matters in the list.

Matters can be added to this list in two ways:

  1. Via the “Add Matter” button by typing in matter and client information.
  2. Via the “Advance Search” by searching and finding matters from the connected accounting system and importing it into MatterAlert.

Add Matter

The “Add Matter” button – only visible if configured – allows the user to add matters to the list by typing the basic matter and client information. There is no validation for the matter number or client number, this is simply allowing the user to create a matter dashboard for a matter or a non-matter use case. For example, if the user wants to have a “Firm Calendar” to setup and push “Firm events” to employees’ calendars or set up a generic Tasks/To-Do list at the company level, they can type an arbitrary number as the matter number and client number to create the “Company Dashboard”.

Advance Search / Import Matter

If the user cannot find a matter in the list of matters, it is because they either do not have access to that matter, or it has not been imported to MatterAlert yet.

To import a matter to MatterAlert:

  • The user can use the “Advance Search” button at the top of the matter list. It will take the user to the advance search page where they can search for matters by typing part of the matter number or matter name.
  • This will search the user’s accounting system to find a match and show the list of matched matters.
  • Clicking on the matter number link will:
    1. Take the user to the matter dashboard if the matter has already been imported and the user has access to it.
    2. Display basic information about the matter, and if the matter is not imported yet, allow the user to select the “Owner” and “Matter Template” before clicking on the “Go” button to import it.

Matter Templates allow the administrator to create customized data-entry forms, actionable tasks, and events based on the matter type (e.g., litigation, IP, Real Estate, etc.) or Practice group.

NoteSelecting the matter owner or template type might be disabled at the configuration level.
